Develop Consistency and Confidence in Hitting, Pitching and Throwing
This ultimate training tool helps players master the strike zone and improve throwing accuracy. The design creates an engaging visual environment, encouraging young athletes to better understand the difference between a pitched strike and ball while hitting plus enhance their control and command while pitching or throwing. The YSZT reduces the need for constant verbal instructions from coaches or parents as the equipment design and set up performs the desired training.
Effective Pitching Practice
The V-Flex prompter system sharpens a player’s focus on the strike zone. These white prompting sticks create a bright rectangular strike zone image clearly seen by the player especially when paired with our 7x4 I-Screen and Focus Mat or 5x5 Catch Net and Focus Mat. The prompting sticks create sharper focus and an energized training space. Furthermore, the prompter sticks allow for customization, enabling players to move the sticks around to create specific pitching zones allowing players to get the most out of their practice sessions.
Simplify Control and Command Training
The primary goal of the YSZT is to help pitchers throw more strikes by providing the proper visual and spatial information needed to achieve superior command of the strike zone with every pitch:
- Use the trainer as the primary target.
- Set the trainer at its lowest height setting and place it directly in front of home plate.
- Start by focusing on throwing pitches into the "actual" strike zone.
- Once the pitcher achieves their target accuracy percentage with pitches inside the strike zone, move on to the next phase.
- Establish proper command of the strike zone before progressing to the next phase.
The secondary phase of training involves throwing borderline strikes just outside the rectangular strike zone:
- A borderline strike is any pitch outside of the actual strike zone but no more than two balls off the edges.
- Throwing borderline strikes on command is the final step in mastering the strike zone.
- The goal is for pitchers to develop the ability to throw borderline strikes intentionally to secure outs or swings and misses.
- Focus on throwing borderline strikes rather than just filling the strike zone with easier-to-hit pitches or mistakes.
Intentional Balls Are Key
During training sessions, we recommend that pitchers never throw more than three strikes in a row:
- Avoid repetitive training to provide a real-time interactive experience, similar to the feel of a game.
- Allow pitchers to throw intentional balls, which is key to mastering the strike zone.
An intentional ball is defined as a pitch that stays outside the inner circle highlighted by the white bungee cord:
- Any pitch that stays inside the inner circle is considered a borderline strike.
Pitchers who train on the YSZT have seen their ability to master a larger space increase significantly:
- Strike zone mastery is achieved when 70% of pitches thrown hit their intended zones, whether they are borderline strikes or actual strikes.
Versatile Hitting Setups
Transform pitching practice into hitting practice with simple adjustments. The base and fiberglass poles allow for three unique setups for hitting:
- Front Toss Training
- Overhand Toss from Seated Position
- Overhand Toss from Standing Position
Young hitters will focus on swinging at strikes as the ball passes through the "V" formed by the two white prompting sticks. This focal zone is key to gaining strike zone discipline. Balls pitched outside of this area will not initiate a swing by the player, but balls pitched inside the prompted zone will initiate a swing.
Simplify Strike Recognition Training
Training a hitter to distinguish between balls and strikes is simple yet effective when following key principles:
- Start by throwing intentional contrast pitches—non-strikes or balls—in random sequences.
- To create contrast, never throw more than three strikes in a row through the YSZT.
The YSZT trainer allows the BP pitcher to throw two distinct types of non-strikes:
- The first non-strike passes through the circle but not the V focus area.
- Tracking this pitch helps develop a critical eye movement pattern for recognizing balls that should be taken.
- The second non-strike can be thrown into the net or outside the device entirely.
- This shortens the tracking time for a "ball" and creates a sharp contrast between balls and strikes.
Strikes:
- Strikes pass through the V focal area, prompting a longer tracking path and leading to a swing.
- The secondary objective is to keep hitters focused on strikes and disengage quickly when a pitch is recognized as a non-strike.
